The Israeli army said that 13 soldiers from the same brigade had been killed in a series of attacks inside Gaza on the third day of a major ground operation. "Over the course of the day, 13 soldiers from the IDF's Golani Brigade were killed in combat in the Gaza Strip," an army statement said. Their deaths raised to 18 the total number of soldiers killed since Israel's ground operation began late on Thursday, in what was the largest number of soldiers killed in combat since the 2006 Lebanon war. Most of Sunday's Palestinian victims were killed in a blistering hours-long Israeli assault on Shejaiya near Gaza City, which began before dawn and has so far claimed 62 Palestinian lives. With ambulances unable to reach the area, the International Committee of the Red Cross called for an urgent temporary ceasefire to allow paramedics to evacuate the dead and wounded, which was agreed on by the two sides. Inside the ravaged neighbourhood, there were hellish scenes of carnage and chaos as a convoy of ambulances moved in to make the most of the calm, an AFP correspondent said. Entire buildings were collapsed on themselves or strewn into the streets, while others were still ablaze, sending pillars of black smoke skywards. There were also bodies, blackened and charred almost beyond recognition, some with whole limbs missing. As the violence raged, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas arrived in Qatar to discuss a ceasefire with Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, with UN chief Ban Ki-moon due there later Sunday at the start of a regional tour to push truce efforts. So far, truce efforts have been rejected by Hamas. Wide of hospital sign STORYLINE: Israeli security forces in riot gear confronted Palestinian demonstrators on Friday after deploying in large numbers along Israel's frontiers on an annual protest day against Israel's land policies. By midday, minor skirmishes had broken out between thousands of protesters and security forces in the Jerusalem area. Palestinians threw stones and Israeli troops responded with tear gas, stun grenades and rubber pellets. No serious injuries were reported. Groups of youths were seen running from tear gas as Israeli troops clashed with protesters in the village of Kufr Kaddum and in east Jerusalem. In Gaza, Palestinians said Israeli forces shot and wounded eight protesters who approached the border during a demonstration organised by Gaza's Hamas rulers. The Israeli military said soldiers shot and wounded one protester. Elsewhere, things were relatively calm. The "Land Day" rallies are an annual event marked by Israeli Arabs and Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza who protest what they say are discriminatory Israeli land policies. Supporters in neighbouring Arab countries also planned marches near the Israeli frontier, but organisers said they would keep protesters away from the borders. Last year, demonstrators from Lebanon and Syria tried twice to break across the borders into Israel, setting off clashes with Israeli troops in which at least 38 people were killed. In southern Lebanon Friday, more than 3,000 Lebanese and Palestinians gathered outside the Crusader-built Beaufort castle 15 kilometres (9 miles) from Israel. Lebanese security forces kept them from moving any closer to the border. Security forces had prepared for demonstrations in northern Israel, where a large portion of Israel's Arab minority lives. Several dozen Palestinians who live in east Jerusalem waved their national flag outside Jerusalem's walled Old City, chanting "One, one homeland!". Palestinians were banned from entering the West Bank except for medical emergencies, and police barred Palestinian men under 40 from praying at a volatile Jerusalem holy site, citing security concerns. The demonstrators performed their communal Muslim Friday prayers where they stood, praying on their flags instead of traditional mats. They were surrounded by what appeared to be an equal number of Israeli security forces. War Between Israel and Palestine - THE GAZA CONFLICT - Documentary Films The Gaza-- Israel dispute belongs of the larger Israeli-- Palestinian problem. Palestinian militant activities escalated in the Gaza Strip following the frustrating election to government of the Islamic political event Hamas in 2005 and 2006. The conflict escalated regarding the split of the Palestinian Authority to Fatah government in the West Bank and the Hamas Government in Gaza and the following violent ousting of Fatah. Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel and Israel's blockade of Gaza have actually exacerbated the dispute. Under its 2005 disengagement strategy, Israel retained special control over Gaza's airspace and territorial waters, continued to patrol and monitor the external land boundary of the Gaza Strip, with the exemption of its southernmost perimeter (where Egypt retained command of the boundary and boundary crossings were supervised by European displays) and continued to keep track of and blockade Gaza's coastline. Israel largely offers for and controls Gaza's water supply, power and communications facilities. They are young, and they are fearless. In Gaza, a growing nonviolent movement, led predominantly by youth, is challenging Israel's ongoing occupation of Palestinian lands in the so-called "buffer zone" -- a unilaterally demarcated and militarily patrolled area that, according to Harvard researcher Sara Roy, "now absorb[s] nearly 14 percent of Gaza's total land and at least 48 percent of total arable land." The zone officially extends 300 meters into Gaza's territory, but "attacks against civilians take place anywhere up to approximately 1.5 kilometers inside the border fence," according to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights. (That's about a mile into a strip of land that is seven miles at its girth.) In this video, some 300 protesters are shown under fire from Israeli guns, too far to see but no less lethal for it. The protestors' crime? They were planting citrus trees to replace those destroyed by Israel's ongoing occupation, which daily deprives Gaza's more than 1.7 million Palestinians of access to their farmland, to the sea that borders them, to the airspace above them -- and, crucially, to their fellow Palestinians. With more than 10 percent of the worldwide Palestinian population living in Gaza, no serious discussion of the conflict or its resolution can exclude them. T/I 10:55:15 Israel and the Palestinian Authority exchanged accusations on Sunday (1/6) over the death of an Arab known to have sold land to Jews. Israeli officials blamed the Palestinian Authority for Saturday's (31/5) fatal shooting of 34-year-old Ali Mohammed Jumhour. He was the third land dealer found dead in the West Bank since Palestinian Justice Minister Frieh Abu Medeen was quoted in a report on May 4 as saying that Palestinians who sold land to Jews faced execution. SHOWS: JERUSALEM ISRAEL 1/6 GV Prime Minister's office; SOT David Bar Ilan (English): "There's something revolting and terrible about a government sanctioning murder. That is something that our society can't tolerate. If these go on we should not only ask that the Palestinian Authority will condemn them, but that they will do something to catch the culprits, to punish them. It is impossible for such murder to go on without the kind of censure we expect from any decent self-respecting government." GAZA: 1/6 SOT Frieh Abu Medeen, Palestinain justice minister (in English): "This is the overiding responsibility of the Israeli government... that's nonsense, if he was killed in Ecuador the Palestinians would get the blame... not my decision, it's the law, we're going to question and interrogate, then the judge will take the decision." JERUSALEM 1/6 GVs Jerusalem neighbourhood of Ramot Eshkol, SOT Eviator Cohen, El-Ad spokesman (in English): "We have people working in the area who have connections with our people. They want to sell the land and we want to buy it. We're paying a good price so people are selling. The authorities are not confiscating even a square inch... as a private company we can buy the land. The Israeli government isn't buying it." They call it ‘the world’s biggest prison’. Nearly two million people live on a small strip of land, about the same size as Manhattan. Very few people get in or out of the Gaza strip. It’s under an Israeli blockade - by land, sea and air. Inside, a generation has grown up knowing only conflict, poverty and destruction. Nicole Johnston has reported on Gaza for years, and covered two wars with Israel from the strip. In this Newsmakers documentary she returns during peacetime, to see how people have survived ten years under siege. Israel is warning that its offensive will intensify, threatening to bring in ground troops while diplomatic talks are underway. On the second day of its offensive, Israel struck around 130 targets in Gaza, hitting weapon caches, command centres, smuggling tunnels, alleged Hamas militants and their homes. Palestinian women and children were among the 22 killed on Wednesday’s attacks. Rockets fired from Gaza are reaching deeper into the Jewish state, with as many as 200 rockets flying to or near Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv, and Hadera on Wednesday. There have been no serious casualties reported on the Israeli side. In a symbolic move of aggression, three missiles were fired towards the southern town of Dimona and the nearby Negev nuclear reactor on Wednesday night. One missile was intercepted by the Iron Dome while two others landed in open areas near the reactor where Israel’s atomic weapons program is thought to be based.

Arabic/Eng/Nat The Palestinians edged one step closer to statehood Monday with the planned opening of a long-awaited land link between the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The so-called safe passage will boost confidence in the peace process and allow Palestinians to travel between the autonomous areas where they hope to establish a state. The passage will also allow residents of poverty-stricken, overcrowded Gaza to seek jobs in the more prosperous West Bank. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) "The opening of the safe passage will give us a good opportunity to see our family and friends in the West Bank. And it will also open up the possibility of cooperation between us and the West Bank" SUPER CAPTION: VoxPop, Palestinian Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said the opening of the safe passage is another step for Palestinians towards independence. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We hope that the opening of the safe passage in the southern route today will further enhance the territorial unity of the West Bank in Gaza, will enable our people to move freely between Gaza and the West Bank." SUPER CAPTION: Saeb Erekat, Palestinian Chief Negotiator Hundreds of Gazans have received temporary special magnetic cards permitting them to use existing Israeli roads to travel from Gaza's Erez Crossing to Tarkumiya, near the southern West Bank city of Hebron. The safe passage will allow most Palestinians to enter Israel for 90-120 minutes in order to travel the 47-kilometre (28-mile) route. Palestinians considered to be security risks can travel the route twice a week, on special buses manned by Israeli security personnel. Israel has launched surprise drills along the Gaza border just months after it unleashed a devastating war against the coastal enclave. The Israeli military says the one-day maneuvers involve both land and air forces. It says the exercise is part of activities to improve the army's operational readiness. Seven months ago, the Israeli offensive left nearly 2,200 Palestinians dead, many of them women and children. The war which lasted for 50 days, also injured some 11-thousand Palestinians. English/Nat Hundreds of Palestinians crossed between the West Bank and Gaza Strip on Monday, after Israel finally opened the so-called safe passage linking the two areas. Palestinians are now able to travel between the autonomous areas in which they hope to establish a state, and no longer need an Israeli-issued work permit in order to do so. The safe passage was due to open three weeks ago, but it was delayed when negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians broke down. The opening of the road link brings the Palestinians one step closer to statehood and gives a major boost to the peace process. Palestinians flocked to the crossing point out of Gaza on Monday, hoping to be amongst the first to use the new route to the West Bank. They have been waiting for the land link since Israel agreed to its construction during the Oslo peace negotiations six years ago. But the opening of the safe passage has been beset with delays. The right-wing Israeli government of Benjamin Netanyahu which came to power in 1996 refused to build the safe passage, arguing that it would endanger national security. The new Israeli prime minister, Ehud Barak, has been promising to accelerate the project since he took office in May. But there have been new setbacks even under his leadership - the passage was due to open three weeks ago, but was held back after Israelis and Palestinians disagreed over the terms of operation. One key sticking point was security. Israel has taken a tough stance on this issue, and Palestinians considered to be a security risk can travel the route twice a week on special buses manned by Israeli security personnel. But Palestinians are hoping to change that under any final status agreement with Israel. SOUNDBITE: (English) "When we talk about the free passage, we are looking forward to when we finish the final status negotiation. At that time, I think that yes, we need and we will have a free and safe passage." SUPER CAPTION: Jamil Taarifi, Palestinian Civil Affairs Minister The opening of the safe passage was also welcomed by many Israelis on Monday. Uri Savir was part of the Israeli team which negotiated the Oslo accords. He sees Monday's opening of the road link as the way forward. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It is another important implementation of Oslo. It will facilitate life for the Palestinians, it will, I hope, increase security for Israelis, increase cooperation, and I think it is the beginning of creating solutions which will be helpful in the long run in permanent status." SUPER CAPTION: Uri Savir, Member of Knesset But not all Israelis agree with Savir. As the first Palestinians made their way from Gaza to the West Bank, right-wing Israeli protestors lined the route calling for it to be closed. But the Palestinian bus arrived as expected at around midday local time. The Israeli authorities expect everyone to complete the 47-kilometre (28-mile) passage in 120 minutes. In all, some 132-thousand Palestinians are so far eligible to use the route, but more safe passage permits are to be issued in coming days Israeli officials say they expect about 1-thousand people to use the route every day. People living in the poverty-stricken Gaza Strip stand to gain the most from the new link, as they will now be able to look for work in the more prosperous West Bank.
